     Here's the story:

 

     I recently had squirrels in my attic and asked the local County Animal Control office if I could buy a trap from them.  They said that traps often hurt the squirrels and suggested instead of trying the trap the squirrels that I put a small bowl of ammonia in the attic where I thought the squirrels were. The smell would be so offensive to the animals that they would leave.

 

  It worked like a charm.   But in two weeks, the ammonia was gone and the squirrels were back.

 

   I went back up in the attic again (in the heat of the summer), put out more ammonia, and shooed the squirrels away for another couple of weeks.

 

   I knew ammonia worked, but it evaporated too quickly and was too hard to replenish. Plus, I didn't like the smell when I was putting it out, it was hot in the attic, and it was a pain in the neck to have to go back up there so often.

 

   My patent pending invention is a replacement screw top for a half gallon or gallon jug of ammonia. My top has three holes punched in it, and I provide all natural highly absorbent wicks for you to thread through the cap. 

 

  You buy a standard half gallon or gallon jug of ammonia from the grocery store, feed the wicks I provide through the holes in my top leaving 5"-6" to the outside of the cap, then replace the top of the ammonia jug with my top with the wicks in it.  Make sure there is enough of the wick inside the bottle to touch the bottom.  Drape the wicks evenly around the outside of the bottle.  Place the bottle with the now damp wicks in the attic near where you suspect the squirrels are.  If there are different locations where the squirrels might be or if the attic is large, put out several bottles.

 

   The ammonia will slowly evaporate into the air, and the squirrels will leave. For months.  If you want the ammonia to wick out faster, pull more wick out of the bottle.

 

   You've made one trip to the attic (instead of three or four), have used the same amount of ammonia as if you poured it into a bowl several times, you didn't have to use one of your own bowls (which probably cost as much or more than my screw tops), and didn't have to worry about smelling or spilling the ammonia.

 

   There's no electronic tone or visible strobe light that might annoy your household pets or neighbors.  No squirrel is harmed.  You won't smell anything.  It's easy.  And it's cheap.
